Dante Moore Is Out for Oregon vs. UCLA, and Dylan Raiola Starts
Oregon quarterback Dante Moore is officially out for Saturday's game against No. 21 UCLA, according to Wednesday's Big Ten injury report, ESPN reported. Moore was back in pads and throwing on Monday, two weeks after a concussion against USC, but coach Dan Lanning gave no timeline for a return to games.
We're going to continue to make sure we do what's best for Dante.
Dylan Raiola, the former Nebraska quarterback, replaced Moore against the Trojans and threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns. He will now make his first start for the No. 13 Ducks. ESPN reports he has 5,232 career passing yards, 36 touchdowns, 17 interceptions and a 13-9 record as a starter. Moore has 926 yards and nine touchdowns through four games.
Oregon vs. UCLA Odds: What the Market Did
DraftKings has trimmed Oregon's number by a point since the open, per ESPN's odds feed as of October 8 at 9:15 AM ET. Oregon is 3-1 and UCLA is 4-0.
| Market | Opening | Current |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Oregon -12.5 | Oregon -11.5 |
| Total | 60.5 | 58.5 |
| Oregon moneyline | -535 | -455 |
| UCLA moneyline | +400 | +350 |
The feed does not say why a line moved, and it does not say whether the open came before or after the injury report, so what follows is our reading.
Our Read: What a Backup Who Has Already Played Is Worth
- The market has not panicked. Oregon is still favored by more than 11 points with its Heisman-contender quarterback out. A one-point move is small next to the headline.
- Raiola is a known quantity. He has played in real games and just put up 289 yards against USC, which is a different situation from an untested backup. One strong relief game is still a small sample.
- UCLA's record is the other side. The Bruins are 4-0, and the Big Ten schedule is where an unbeaten team's record gets tested. We cannot say how good that start is from these sources.
- The lower total may be habit. Two points came off the total, which could reflect the quarterback change. It is a reading, not a reported cause.
The evidence points both ways. Raiola's relief game is encouraging, and his first start is still his first start.
What to Watch Before Saturday
- Whether Oregon leans on Raiola's arm or protects him with a shorter script.
- Whether Moore dresses or is cleared in the weeks ahead, since Lanning said the team will not rush him.
- Whether the Oregon spread moves again by kickoff, set for 12:30 PM PT Saturday per ESPN's feed.
- How UCLA's 4-0 start holds up on the road.
