How Mines Multipliers Are Derived

A multiplier is one divided by the chance of surviving that far, with the house edge taken off. That is the whole calculation, and it means a casino cannot set payouts freely without changing its stated return.

On a 25 tile board with three mines, your first pick is safe 22 times in 25, which is 88%. Surviving two picks is 22 in 25 multiplied by 21 in 24, or about 77%. Invert that and take off 1%, and the two tile multiplier is roughly 1.29x.

Because the payout follows from the odds, a Mines game advertising a 99% return has no room to be stingier on one setting than another. Where the numbers do not match the table above, the edge is higher than 1%.

Why the Odds Are Not Independent

Every tile you open changes the odds of the next one, which separates Mines from dice or coin flip. Revealing a safe tile removes it from the pool, so the remaining mines are concentrated among fewer unopened squares.

With three mines on 25 tiles, your first pick carries a 12% chance of losing. By the time you have opened fifteen safe tiles, ten remain and three of them are mines, so the next pick loses 30% of the time.

That rising risk is why the multiplier curve steepens rather than climbing in a straight line. The payouts get dramatic precisely where the game gets dangerous.

Where to Cash Out in Mines

Every cash-out point has the same expected value, so there is no mathematically correct place to stop. The multiplier rises exactly as fast as your chance of reaching it falls, and the edge is applied evenly across the whole curve.

What changes is variance. Cashing at two or three tiles wins often for a small amount, and pushing toward the end of the board wins rarely for a great deal. Both give back the same fraction of what you stake over enough rounds.

The genuinely useful decision is the same one that applies at dice and crash. Set a session loss limit before you start, because that is the only choice here that changes an outcome.

Mines uses the same commitment scheme as the other originals, with the server seed published as a hash before you play. The digest seeds a shuffle that places the mines, so one hash determines the whole board.
