Texas Clarifies Report That AI Drove Its Fourth-and-2 Decision
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte on Friday sought to clarify a report that the Longhorns used an AI analytics platform when they went for it on fourth-and-2 in last weekend's 27-24 loss to Florida, per ESPN. Texas trailed 20-17 at the time, and Arch Manning lost 3 yards on the play.
ESPN says the Austin American-Statesman reported that Del Conte cited the play as an example of the new platform, called Bevo Lab. On Texas Football later posted on X that he cited it as an example of what the platform "could suggest, not what it actually did."
The school officially announced Bevo Lab on Friday. Per ESPN, it will include all 21 sports and 500 athletes, with about 40 student researchers working under data analyst Kirk Goldsberry, and a "transfer AI" system for roster evaluation, game strategy and scouting, beginning with football.

Our Read: A Coaching Debate Wrapped in a Marketing Launch
- The clarification matters more than the headline. By Texas's own account the AI did not make that call, so the story is a messy rollout of an announcement and not evidence of a machine coaching the team.
- A failed fourth down is not proof of a bad one. Going for it while trailing by three is a defensible choice that can still fail, and one result cannot grade the decision either way.
- The spread move is far bigger than any one play. Six and a half points off the line is roughly what a market trims for a shift in how it rates the teams, and Ole Miss's 5-1 record against Texas's 4-2 fits that. The feed gives no cause, so this is inference.
- Evidence cuts both ways. Texas lost a close game to Florida, which can read as bad luck or as a pattern, and six games is a small sample for either.
